Carpathia's Arrival
- The RMS Carpathia, which had received Titanic's distress signals, steamed at full speed through ice fields and arrived around 4 a.m. The crew began rescuing survivors from lifeboats. In total, 705 people were rescued.
Death Toll and Survivors
- Out of 2,224 passengers and crew, over 1,500 lost their lives. Most victims died of hypothermia in the freezing waters. Only a handful of people pulled from the water survived.
- Survivor Accounts: Survivors' testimonies provided crucial insights into the sinking, although conflicting reports on key events like the exact moment of the ship's breakup have fueled controversy.
The Inquiries
- Both American and British inquiries followed the disaster, focusing on why the ship was sailing at full speed despite ice warnings and why there were so few lifeboats. The inquiries led to changes in maritime laws, including requirements for sufficient lifeboats, 24-hour radio watch on ships, and regular lifeboat drills.
